2010 ComunAuto

CommunAuto is a late find.
Basically it is like Bixi (boooo) for cars.
I have some friends who rate it highly

I will try it in 2010 and report back.
They reckon it costs $500 returnable membership, $500 anual fee and a further $500 in mileage costs...
So $1000 a year..sounds a lot? Well it includes gas and insurance. Insurance is $1000 a year at least anyway and gas maybe $1000 a year or more so it is not a lot is it? Checked on a saturday afternoon and there were 9 cars available within a 3 minute walk.
Unlike stupid bixi, (where is it now?), this is sensible and practical and a great scheme if you need a car occaisionally (shoping, going out etc)...

I'm a bit unsure on the parking thing and where you pick it up...but let's see.
For now here are the rates...seems similar to car rental prices but has advantage of local drop off and pick up and can be booked by the hour..Access to AB&C require the $500 deposit.

Hello,

Some precisions about Communauto prices. Luckily, becoming a member of Communauto can cost as low as $37/year, no refundable membership fee required (the famous $500)... Nothing more if you don’t want a $0 deductible ($40/year). This of course excludes any vehicle usage fees. With the aforementioned plan, called “Le Lièvre”, rates start at $4.95/hour ($49.50 per day) plus $0.11 per km.

If you intend on using Communauto cars more frequently, you can choose the A, B or C plan. In this case you have to pay the $500 refundable membership fee and, if you choose our most popular plan (C), the annual fee is just $37 and rates start at $1.60/hour ($19.20/day) plus $0.34 per km. As you’ve noted, fuel and insurance are always included in our rates, so you don’t have to add to these costs.

So to become a member you have to spend a minimum varying from $37 to $537 (of which $500 is refundable if you cancel your membership after at least one year), and then you pay just for what you use.

Just to give you an idea, the average usage of Communauto per user per year (fuel, insurance, hours and annual fee) works out to about $750 – $800 for 1400 – 1500 km.

I hope the service will fit your needs.

Thanks for clarification
Can you comment on the waiting times following getting the paperwork together? I have heard there is a waiting list (well it is quebec) for interviews that is about a month...

Hi, actually the delay to have a rendez-vous to sign the contract with Communauto is one day, if you want to come during a working day, and one week, if you want to come in the evening or the week end. For sure in some period of the year you could wait longer (in the past this delay reached even one month, like in summer). In the next future this process will be even faster, because it will be possible to join directly online (This is already the case for the resident of St-Bruno).
